Azuquita y Su Orquesta Melao — Guajiro Bacan
from Pura Salsa (1975)
I think salsa gets a bad rap. It seems like it’s either background to clattering dishes at a Cuban hole in the wall, or the soundtrack to Thursday singles night at the local bar, ladies free before 10pm.
If that sounds about right, this tune might change your mind — salsa to listen to all the way through. It doesn’t start with flashy horns or drum trills or any of that. It kicks off with a breakbeat worthy of James Brown… which quickly dissolves into hand drums and a cappella singing from Azuquita (Little Sugar), the Panama-born, Paris-cured funky salsero.
Soak it up. Before long Orquesta Melao heats it all up to salsa temperatures and things start to boil. They say a watched pot never boils, but this one’s going to break out right before your ears and blossom into the most beautiful salsa you’ve ever heard. Guajiro bacan!

Once things start to ‘boil’, they start to sound like heaven.
