Everything Brandon Biondo (aka WALSH) touches turns to funk. He literally presses a key on his synthesizer and a leopard-print leotard jumps out of the speaker.
I mean these mechanical drum hits are just TOO MUCH. Kinda nasty. I think Biondo’s officially turned into a robot. And you will too, if you aren’t careful with this song. Also don’t miss the other standout track, ‘Kommissar.’

Walsh — Birthday Girl (2010)
Brandon Biondo (Walsh, Coolrunnings) is the resident genius at cooking up these slow-burning groovers. This song reminds me a lot of the limb-flailing looseness of Elton John’s Bennie & the Jets. But it also sounds like it was a little too dark backstage…and Bennie grabbed the quaaludes instead of the bennies. Only sloooow jams tonight.
The reason it sounds so loopy, I think, is that he sampled Andre Cymone’s 1982 tune ‘Kelly’s Eyes.’ And slowed it down…a lot. Great choice to sample — the original is funky as hell. (and features the plea, at about 2:40, ‘I want to get into your underwear.’)
Cymone’s funk has a good pedigree — he was Prince’s childhood friend and his touring bass player, briefly, in the pre-Revolution days. Cymone’s family also took in Prince as a child when he was looking to escape from his father. So they go way back.
Anyway, back to this track — the layered guitar loops and woo-hoos about halfway through get me every time. The operatic singing, not so much. But lovely track nonetheless. Hope Brandon Biondo keeps coming out with these cassette deck burners.
