Os 3 Morais — Azul Da Cor Do Mar Tico - Tico No Fuba
from Os 3 Morais (1971)
Take this song. Place on tongue. Swallow.
A vocal chill pill from Brazilian siblings Jane Vicentina do Espírito Santo, Sidney do Espírito Santo e Roberto do Espírito Santo: the three ‘Morais’ (their mother’s maiden name).
The trio got its start in the early 60s recording jingles for commercials—you can definitely hear a tinge of soap ad salesmanship in these super-polished vocals.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…
Sweet Lights — Relate to You
from Sweet Lights (2010)
Sweet Lights put out one of my favorite albums of last year — if you’re looking for a worthwhile way to spend $8 I highly recommend it. In the theme of broadcasting my Sweet Lights love a little bit more, here’s Sweet Lights’ repurposing of Devendra Banhart’s softcore porn commercial for expensive sunglasses and mustaches.
In the video, Devendra frolics with his gorgeous girlfriend at John Lautner’s Rainbow House in LA (you may have previously seen the house blown to smithereens in Lethal Weapon 2).
The original commercial is a bit hard to handle (unless you regularly take off your lover’s sunglasses with your toes, I guess, while massaging each other in the bath). But the Sweet Lights re-do has fewer gratuitous sunglasses shots, less conventional edits (i.e. the drumbeat booty slide scene, around 2:55) — and, well, the soundtrack is better too.
Nice interview with Shai Halperin (aka Sweet Lights) about the video o’er at yvynyl.
