Razika — Why Have We To Wait
from Program 91 (2011)
This precious album of oh-so-catchy Norwegian pop easily made it onto my most-listened-to-in-2011 list. This particular track is a Pussycats cover, and the chorus will slay you (original here).
And now.. these vintage-1991 kids have landed in NYC. The girls have been cavorting around town, visiting the Apple Store and Coney Island too (good choice!).
I know what they’re doing tonight, too, if you’re curious. Playing at Glasslands! So come out and support them! And if you’re down in the Lone Star state right now, they are en route to SXSW.

Lushlife — Big Sur
from Plateau Vision (Apr 2012)
Lushlife previews a plush, gorgeously produced track from the forthcoming album Plateau Vision. Hat tip to PopThatRocks, who says: “album is out April 17 on Western Vinyl. Don’t forget to grab Lushlife’s free mixtape from last year if you haven’t yet.”
Indeed. And this track is up for grabs at bandcamp. Record release party at Glasslands April 18th.
Dustin Wong — Diagonally Talking Echo
from Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads (2012)
Dustin Wong’s music has always conjured up colors in my mind… the staccato guitar loops seem almost like a pointillist painting in sound. Here that color is visualized by Dustin himself, in the video for ‘Diagonally Talking Echo,’ a track from his new solo record, Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads, out Feb 21st on Thrill Jockey. (Get ready—he screams…)
Also on the Dreams theme, he wants your collaboration on the project “Say Your Dream, Create a Sound”:
Tell Dustin about a significant dream by recording a description of the dream to his Soundcloud page. Dustin will create and original piece of music inspired by each dream and incorporating your description, and post a selection of these recordings to his Soundcloud page beginning on Monday, February 20.
Catch him this Sat 1/21 at 285 Kent in Williamsburg with Akron/Family; Fri 2/3 at Glasslands; or Sat 2/4 at Wesleyan University.

Trippple Nippples — Golden Road (Oli Chang Remix) (2012)
More beautiful sounds from the Tokyo dream team, Trippple Nippples, re-imagined by remix wizard Oli Chang. (you can hear the original on the Trippple Nippples soundcloud)
I was lucky enough to catch the girls’ Glasslands show last month, an audio freakout with a jaw-dropping stage show to match. Catch them if you can… (bring earplugs)
yvynyl:
In this past week the High Highs’ Oli Chang has dropped half a dozen amazing new remixes over on his Sndcld. Don’t miss his redo of Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on the Sun” and Millionyoung “Replicants” - all stripped naked and repainted with piano and atmospherics. Absolutely lovely.
Oh, and speaking of the women of Tokyo’s Trippple Nippples… I can’t wait to tell you about #MEGABLAAG SXSW 2012. Sayin’. Shhhh. Here. Shhhh.

Dinowalrus — Phone Home from the Edge (2010)
Spacy noise with some truly delightful guitar flurries and drum rolls, from Brooklyn’s very own Dinowalrus.
NYC folks: they play tonight (12/1) at Glasslands with Gauntlet Hair, or next Thursday 12/8 at 285 Kent. In lieu of that, check ‘em out at bandcamp.

Nightlands — Trouble
from Covers (2011)
The other day I was checking up on Nightlands (aka Dave Hartley) and saw that, 1.) it would appear he’s working on a new LP, which I’m really stoked to hear, and that 2.) he released, some time ago, a recording of his Lindsey Buckingham cover ‘Trouble.’
I am posting it here to commemorate the night I saw him play ‘Trouble’ at Glasslands. I yelled out “best cover ever!” after the song, to which Dave replied “best SONG ever!”
I had a stupid grin stapled to my face the rest of the night.
(previously noted Buckingham, including the original)

Dent May — Eastover Wives (2010)
I just posted a track from Mississippi’s Dent May the other day…but I’m gonna post another. Cause I saw him last night at Glasslands and he was a real tour-de-force. Sang with the swagger and melodic magic of Elvis Costello—and the group pulled off Pet-Sounds-caliber harmonies. Live. With a bit of disco splashed on top. Pop gold. And everyone knew it—he couldn’t walk through the crowd afterward without someone pulling him aside to say “great set.” Tough act for Julian Lynch to follow.
He says he’s coming out with a full length early next year. Stay tuned for that… in the meantime there’s one last chance to catch him live this tour. He plays Maxwell’s in Hoboken this Sunday, with Real Estate.

Puro Instinct — Luv Goon
from Headbangers in Ecstasy (Mexican Summer, 2011)
The California sisters formerly known as Pearl Harbor have given their blonde locks a little shot of hairspray and reinvented themselves as Puro Instinct, and they’ve got a new full-length out on the Mexican Summer label. This track dates back a few years but Piper and Skylar have given it a little airbrushing here—new tinny sound, same great refrain.
The girls will be in town June 28th at Glasslands and June 29th at Mercury Lounge, with shredded-80s-t-shirt-chic-chanteuse Geneva Jacuzzi opening both nights. This is most certainly going to be a spectacle. But there may be a curfew—Puro Instinct guitarist Skylar just had her sweet 16 party earlier this year. Kids…

Mutual Benefit — No Names
from Mutual Spirits (2011)
Sweet, sweet harmony. Putting this Glasslands show on my calendar now… and I hope they’ll be carting their string menagerie with them!
yvynyl:
The good folks behind Father/Daughter Records asked Jheri Evans from Get Off the Coast and me to co-premiere a couple tracks today from their forthcoming split release - and their first 12” - Mutual Spirits LP.
Says Jordan Lee of this track, “the girl’s voice belongs to Cory of Lizard Kisses. Also Steffaloo is on harmonies and Katie Pierce is on violin. I didn’t mean to make it such a blogger-studded cast but it just kind of worked out.”
Order that baby up right here. The tunes are pressed on gold + clear swirl vinyl and is limited to 250. Album art by Nathaniel Whitcomb of Think or Smile. Catch them both live at the record release show at Glasslands in Brooklyn on June 8th.
Nightlands live at Glasslands in Brooklyn.
They covered Lindsey Buckingham…my love is complete. Amazing
